Who We Are

Gankuku (translated as, “at Granny’s”)

We have integrated the safe customary model of midwifery (that bases its care and service on emotional support, experience, individualized care and guidance by the elderly women in the community), with the contemporary model of midwifery that is based on relevant modern  methods and techniques, that help with early identification of high risk pregnancies in a timely manner.,

This aids in reducing complications during pregnancy, labour and delivery, resulting in the reduction of  maternal and infant  mortality. Gankuku pays an ode to the traditional science which birthed midwifery or laid the foundation of midwifery as we know it today.

Our vision at Gankuku is to provide a holistic, nurturing, midwife led, client-centred service at globally acceptable standards in line with the Botswana Ministry of Health.

This is in congruence with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that by 2030, there should be reduction in the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births.

By 2030, to ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services, including for family planning, information and education, and the integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programs.

At Gankuku we also believe preparation is key and our main goal, is to allow pregnancy to be as natural, enjoyable and a less daunting as possible. This is achieved by a model that improves maternal/birth outcomes.

“Most maternal deaths are preventable, as the health-care solutions to prevent or manage complications are well known. All women need access to high-quality care in pregnancy, and during and after childbirth. It is particularly important that all births are attended by skilled health professionals, as timely management and treatment can make the difference between life and death for the mother as well as for the baby.  At Gankuku we aim for our client to not only have a safe birth but feel listened to and emotionally supported and confident going into parenthood.

Our 5 key objectives are:

  1. Monitoring the physical, emotional, and social wellbeing of the mother and baby.
  2. Customizing bespoke and individualized continuous care/support throughout the pregnancy, birth, and beyond (Antenatal & Postnatal)
  3. Lessening intrusive interventions (instrumental deliveries) and methods
  4. Identifying and timely upscaling of high-risk women who require specialized attention appropriately
  5. Substantially reducing care for service fees by charging competitive but affordable fees to the community thus lowering hospital bills.
